Demolition of old county jail nearly complete

The jail and sheriff’s quarters that opened in 1916 and stood behind the courthouse were nearly gone as of last week and,  in their place, a new sallyport and office space for the Sheriff’s Department. Much of the demolition was completed last week.

The top photo shows the view on Friday, October 28th, and the bottom two photos were taken a few days earlier.

The county Property Department has salvaged several items and delivered them to the Marquette County Historical Society and the Montello Historic Preservation Society in order to preserve some of the history of the old jail. The sallyport building project is expected to be completed next July.
