Gorgeous sunshine and delicious smells filled the air on Saturday as 30 teams competed in the Puckaway Pigfest at Lake Arrowhead Campground. We had 14 volunteers come out from the campground and the local community to support the Marquette County Care & Share Food Bank; these volunteers helped sell and tie-dye t-shirts, scoop ice cream, give visitors and judges golf cart rides, and even ran a Dessert Competition. Thanks to their hard work and the campers and visitors' generosity, the Marquette County Care & Share Food Bank was able to raise $2,500 on Saturday.
We also need to give huge thanks to our barbecue teams who traveled from all over the Midwest to participate - we couldn’t host the Puckaway Pigfest without you! They cooked delicious food, and those with vending licenses sold their amazing barbecue after the judging was over. BBQ Team Que U took home a chainsaw woodcarving pig when they won first place overall, and Wicked Smoke of Fort Atkinson took home the second wooden pig when they won 2nd place overall.
The Marquette County Care & Share Food Bank’s Dessert Competition was a big success with 8 decadent desserts that the People’s Choice Judges got to sample. The lemon curd cheesecake took first place and the second place was a triple chocolate cheesecake submitted by Madison Frink, a Lake Arrowhead camper.
The Puckaway Pigfest, which was sponsored by Princeton Piggly Wiggly and Engelhardt Dairy, was a State Championship BBQ competition that was sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. Que U will advance to the American Royal World Series of BBQ Invitational, and be entered into a drawing to possibly go to the Jack Daniels World Championship Barbecue Invitational.
Thank you to everyone who came out to Lake Arrowhead Campground and supported our community food bank! It was truly wonderful to see people pulling together to support such a great cause.
