Westfield Area High School Celebrates Record Breaking Winter Sports Seasons

Westfield winter sports are in the middle of wrapping up very successful seasons, with school records being broken left and right and several teams and athletes celebrating making it to state competitions. Two different celebrations were held at Westfield Area High School this past week, highlighting the accomplishments their students have achieved.

On Wednesday, February 26th, three state-bound teams received escorts on Westfield Village firetrucks, starting at the firehouse before proceeding to Westfield Elementary School and then the High School. They included the Mock Trial team, the Bowling Team, and state-bound members of the Wrestling Team.

One of the school’s two Mock Trial teams placed second at regionals earlier this year and earned a spot at the state tournament. While the team is unable to attend the state competition due to a pre-planned Spring Break Choir trip to New York City, they saw a lot of success and student interest in the program’s second year.

Westfield Wrestlers Arianna Weber and Mason Groskreutz received an escort and competed at state this past weekend. Arianna Weber became the first female wrestler in Westfield history to make the podium at the WIAA state tournament and finished 6th in her weight class at state.

Finally, the Westfield Bowling Team received a firetruck ride and will be competing at state this weekend. The team will face off at Rolling Thunder Lanes in Neenah on March 7th, 8th, and 9th. The team finished their regular season with 13 wins and 5 losses, placing them overall 2nd place in their district. The last time the team made it to state was 20 years ago!

Then on Friday, February 28th, a pep rally honoring the school’s basketball teams was held at the end of the day.

First, the Westfield Boys Basketball team won the South-Central Conference title with their win on February 27th at Adams-Friendship.  This is the first title the boys team has won since 1986 and its first ever as a member of the South-Central Conference. The team is seeded 3rd in their bracket and they will host a regional semifinal in Westfield on March 7th at 7pm. Tickets for the game are $6 and will be sold only at the door with cash and card options. Doors will open at 6:15pm with the game starting at 7pm. The game will also be streamed on Westfield’s Hudl fan page.

If the boys win their Friday game their regional final game would be on Saturday, March 8th, at 7pm. The game will be in Marshall or in Westfield based on outcomes of Friday's games.

The Westfield Girls Basketball team also continued their win streak and won both of their games this weekend, giving them their fifth straight regional title. The girls will now advance to the Sectional Semifinal on Thursday, March 6th, at Markesan High School against Pardeeville. The tickets are $7 and can only be bought at Markesan before the game starts. Doors for the game open at 6pm and the game will start at 7pm. The game will also be livestreamed on Markesan's Hudl fan page.

If the girls win their Thursday playoff game they would then advance to the sectional final on Saturday, March 8th, at 1 pm in Waterloo.

In addition to the basketball team’s winning seasons, both Sam Berruecos-Morales and Haddie Showen broke the record for most points in a season each of their basketball teams.
